On April 10, we aired the first part of an interview that I conducted with Allison Koehler, the Director of Education for the Sarasota Film Festival, or SFF. That portion of the interview dealt specifically with education events that were coming up as part of the SFF, which was under way at the time. This second portion of the interview regards the SFF's Education programs and classes that run throughout the year, which, Koehler announced during the SFF's Filmmaker Tribute Awards on Saturdal, April 13, reached more than 5,000 students this year, free of charge. This is part two of that interview.

Global Brigades, which describes itself as the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization, has various chapters throughout the world that work to improve human rights and health standards in areas of the world where people often struggle. The Global Brigades chapter at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, often referred to as LECOM, is currently raising funds to send at least 22 medical students and health professionals to Honduras from May 26 to June 1. There, they will offer desperately needed medical and infrastructural assistance to members of a small community that lacks the resources to offer adequate health services to residents.

For more information about the trip, I spoke with Thomas Murray, a graduate medical student at LECOM and Global Brigades member who will be taking part in the trip.

For many patrons of the Sarasota Film Festival, or SFF, the program is focused mainly within the nine or ten day stretch bookended by major events and films. Those involved with the SFF Education program, however, continue to engage with the community long after the credits have rolled on the last film, working with students of all ages year-round to offer free classes that impart them with skills that can be used behind the camera, in the cutting room or in front of the silver screen.

For more information about the program and its initiatives, I spoke with Allison Koehler, the Director of Education for the SFF's Education Department.

There has recently been some community resistance to a request by River's Edge Community Church to rezone its property on the corner of Beneva and Bee Ridge Road so that it may be sold to a developer called the Beneva Land Trust, which would tear down the church and replace it with a 24-hour Wal-Mart grocery store.

So far, about 550 homeowners in the area have signed a petition to leave the zoning as is and are working to gain more signatures and support ahead of a County Commission meeting that will likely determine the future zoning policy of the property. This meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sarasota County Building, 1660 Ringling Boulevard. For more information about this effort, I spoke with Sharon Whalen, who has been helping to lead the community effort.

With the Florida Legislature about halfway through the current session, it's becoming more clear which bills are making headway. SB1770, also known as the Senate Property Insurance Bill, has passed through the necessary hearings and may soon be brought to the floor in the Senate. A similar bill with the same title, HB0909, is still undergoing hearings in the House of Representatives. These developments have raised concerns among consumer advocates that passage of these bills will raise rates for Citizens Property Insurance Corp. and on many customers.

For more information about this viewpoint, I spoke with Bill Newton, Executive Director of the Florida Consumer Action Network, or FCAN.
